A group of volunteers is checking out the shelters and making a list of the highly adoptable dogs they find.  I am going to publish their findings as I get them - daily if that's how it's given to me.

I am going to try to make this list easy to read.  The dogs on the top of the list will be the most recent, with the dogs on the bottom being less current, so you can put this page on your favorite places and see what's available without spending too much time.  There may  be cats. I'm not sure.  The details are not fully worked out yet.  The date the page is updated can be found at the top of the page.  I will put the date the list is received just ahead of the list itself.

Words of Advice

For those of you who are not familiar with the current laws in CA, one thing I need to make sure that everyone understands is that the minimum holding time for strays is four business days, not including the day of impoundment. Some shelters, this will work out to be seven days, but for some shelters, it will be only four business days,  because they are open every day, meaning four days...period. There are very few instances which shelters are required to keep dogs/cats other stray animals for six business days, not including the day of impoundment, but that will probably not affect any animal in Southern California since this is mostly for shelters that are in remote, rural areas such as some in northern California.

Owner turn in animals (owner relinquished pets) are required to be held for two business days, not including the day of impoundment. The first day doesn't count because it could be 5 p.m. right before the shelter is closing. Second full business day is just for the owner to reclaim their animal in cases of neighbor turning in dogs, disgruntled spouse, etc. Third day which is really the second full day is for adoption. Next day, animal could be euthanized. Of course, in both owner turn in and stray animals, shelters have the option of keeping the dogs and cats longer prior to euthanasia. 

Most of these dogs are in high-kill shelters.  If one seems of interest to you, I suggest you get in your car and GO.  I would advise you not to call them on the phone.  Most shelters are under funded and those answering the phones may not really have the correct answers.  Wouldn't it be a shame if the perfect dog for you was put to sleep because the person answering the phone really didn't know the answer?

The breeds indicated are the best guess of the person providing the information.  Please do not be upset if when you get to the dog it is not the purebred dog described.  Sometimes it's really hard to tell.  I can tell a beautiful purebred German shepherd dog.  But a GSD who is perhaps poorly bred, or all the Belgian shepherds, are really hard to tell from mixed breed dogs.  I personally cannot tell the little small fuzzy breeds apart.

These dogs were there at the instant in time the shelter scout wrote them down.  Unfortunately, they may be gone even a half hour later.  We cannot guarantee these dogs will still be there by the time you read this.  I wish we could.
